T he arrival of spring is marked by an exciting collection of food and music festivals, an elite surfing competition, and traditional celebrations that hark back to Cornwall’s roots.
There’s even a chance to see knights in shining armour battle it out at one of the county’s finest castles. With so much choice, here’s a rundown of some of the best things to see and do across Cornwall in May.
English National Surfing Championships (6th-8th)
Watergate Bay is set to host elite surfers in what has become one of the highlights of the surfing calendar. The English National Surfing Championships is one of the longest-running surf competitions in the UK. The event promises three full days of double peak surfing that will take place with divisions from U12s up to Kahunas (45+) in shortboard, longboarding men and women, and U18s. Find out more here.
Helston Flora Day (7th)
One of the oldest British customs still practised today, Helston Flora Day is an iconic celebration that sees the town’s streets transformed with dance and song. Marking the arrival of spring, the midday dance is the most well-known. The local men don top hats and tails while the women wear frocks, before dancing through the town. Helston’s symbolic flower, the lily of the valley, is on display throughout. Don’t miss out on a unique day filled with jubilation, stalls, entertainment, and plenty of beer. Find out more here.
St Ives Food & Drink Festival (13th-15th)
This annual culinary highlight welcomes celebrity chefs, market stalls, and live music to the glorious white sands of Porthminster Beach. Among the highlights at this year’s festival is our chef ambassador, Jack Stein, who will be showcasing a series of new beer-inspired dishes that fuse fantastic local produce with our Tribute pale ale, Proper Job IPA, and korev lager.
